Ammonite Yarns
Ebb Tide Shawl Pattern
Ebb Tide Shawl Pattern
Based on our Ebb Tide skirt, this is a long narrow crescent shawl with a sawtooth bottom edge. The stitch pattern is a simplified version of our Ebb Tide skirt which uses short rows to make a ripple pattern which was inspired by the texture of the beach when the tide goes out.
This shawl uses two colours of yarn with the option of using two different weights or fibres.
Worked from one side point to the other, the shawl uses a series of wedges to create its the shape.
The two yarns are worked in alternating two row stripes of colour A in garter stitch and colour B in stocking stitch. The yarn not in use is carried along the top edge of the work. Short rows are worked within the stocking stitch rows making these stripes wider at the bottom edge. The smooth side of the stocking stitch sections is the right side.
Markers are placed at the beginning of each wedge to indicate the position of the short rows. It is helpful to use different coloured or numbered markers to show which is which. The spacing between the markers changes as the wedge is worked and they are repositioned at the start of each wedge.
The 24 row wedges are subtly different in each section to give the shaping to the shawl. Make sure to follow the instructions for the correct section.
Materials:
The shawl uses a relatively plain yarn for colour A (to make the garter ridges) and a yarn with a strong colour or texture contrast for colour B. We designed it to use the entirety of a single skein of Woolly Wumpkins merino 4-ply for yarn B which has 425m per 100g.
Other similar yarns have less metres per 100g and will not complete the shawl. The pictures of the sample shawl blocking at the end of this pattern show how far a typical skein with 400m will go, the ending tip was worked in another yarn. The shawl can be made smaller by reducing the number of centre wedges worked.
When substituting, bear in mind that it takes approximately 170m of yarn B to work the decreasing and ending sections. Monitor your yarn usage as you work the three centre section wedges and consider working fewer if necessary.
Tension is not critical for this project but you should expect to have 22 stitches to 10cm on the stocking stitch rows
