Elegy to Morfa knitted jumper patterns
£5.00
Patterns for our Elegy to Morfa jumper are available as a PDF download or as a printed paper copy.
The related Just Grillin' cowl pattern is available separately.
This knitted jumper is worked top down and in the round in double knitting weight yarn. It incorporates an easy slip-stitch yoke pattern which can be repeated at the hem of the body and sleeves if desired. The colour work in the yoke is intended to contrast a variegated yarn with a plain yarn main colour which makes it ideal for a single skein of hand dyed yarn along with a plain or tonal background colour.
The pattern includes two neck shape options – a cosy funnel neck and a round neck. The fit is intended to be relaxed with approximately 10cm/4” positive ease.
We have provided instructions for a range of adult sizes in two body shapes. The M version gives sizes M1 to M12 which correspond to typical male fit with a longer body and sleeve length along with a wider armhole and sleeve. The F version for a typical female fit (shorter body and sleeve with narrower armhole) sizes F1 to F12 are available separately. There is a discount if both versions are purchased together.
The length of the body and sleeves can be adjusted further if desired but bear in mind that any adjustments you plan may affect yarn quantities required.
We recommend choosing the size closest to your desired finished chest measurement.
This was our Wonderwool design for 2024 and was initially going to be called Just Grillin’ (like it’s companion cowl pattern) but then Tata Steel announced the closure of the blast furnaces at Port Talbot Steelworks in South Wales. As Ruth, co-owner of Ammonite Yarns, worked there for several years, the announcement struck close to home.
With the loss of blast furnace ironmaking at Port Talbot in South Wales UK, it was clear that the coke ovens, where coal is processed into coke, would also close. Morfa coke ovens in Port Talbot closed earlier than expected on 20th March 2024. As we watched footage of the final coke push, Ruth commented that coke ovens have a similar grid structure and colour palette to our first finished sample. We decided to dedicate the design to the last operational coke oven in the UK – our elegy on the end of a 300 year heritage of industrial coke production in the UK.
